Brunswick Acres Elementary School is home to the South Brunswick elementary level Autism program. The school not only educates children on the Autism spectrum, but also raises awareness among their peers to develop understanding. The presence of empathy in the school population as a whole plays an important role in their renown, effective programming.
Autism is a complex brain disorder that is often misunderstood because the disorder can be characterized in varying degrees; difficulty with social interaction, difficulty with both verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Students in the Preschool Disabled program are taught by certified special education teachers and are assisted by paraprofessionals. The program is based upon developmentally appropriate curriculum and provides speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy, when needed. Autism education at Brunswick Acres not only focuses on kids in the program, but also focuses on mainstream, typical children who are taught the nature of the disorder. Emphasis on Autism awareness and inclusion develops long term dividends for everyone by teaching all students the skills and understanding they need to integrate into their communities and live rich, purposeful lives.
